For every answer, I like to bring up a question.
I dedicated a post in my personal journal to the marvelous Kim Novak, who stars alongside Jimmy Stewart in two of my favorite movies. I set out to learn a little more about her. Here are tidbits from and links to various articles.
"I don’t remember talking with Jimmy about Vertigo. We were just on to the next movie. We had such a wonderful time making Bell, Book and Candle and just got closer as people. We had a wonderful friendship. The director would yell ‘Cut,’ the scene would be over, they’d throw on the lights and we’d still be sitting there. We wouldn’t even say anything to each other. We’d just be there with our feet resting on an end table and communicating silently, comfortable in each other’s presence without feeling we were in the midst of Hollywood. I always felt Jimmy was trapped in Hollywood. He felt it himself. He loved aviation so much and he wanted to be able to do more of that. He somehow just got stuck here. I’ve never met two people who were less ‘Hollywood’ than Jimmy Stewart and Fred Astaire, with whom I made The Notorious Landlady (1962). They didn’t belong here but their lives were here. They couldn’t break away from it, for some reason. I just had to break away."
Kim Novak about making Vertigo (interview 2003)
"If you're wanting glamorous or really beautiful or really sexy, well then, I wasn't really the one, but I could do all of that. You could just get really lost in that kind of image."
Washington Post: Kim Novak: No Fear of Falling (October 14, 1996)
"Of course, in a way, that was how Hollywood treated its women in those days," Novak said. "I could really identify with Judy, being pushed and pulled this way and that, being told what dresses to wear, how to walk, how to behave. I think there was a little edge in my performance that I was trying to suggest that I would not allow myself to be pushed beyond a certain point - that I was there, I was me, I insisted on myself."
Kim Novak on Hitchcock, Hollywood (ROGER EBERT, October 17, 1996)
"Without a doubt, Jimmy Stewart influenced me as an actor."( Trailers for Vertigo and Bell Book and CandleCollapse )

So, I got my Jeanne Eagels bootleg dvd about a week ago, and it is amazing.
The quality is really good, not as good as it could be, but good enough.
It was so good to actually get to watch it, I figured I never would be able to.
Anyhow, I put on some of the screencaps I took because, well because you wont find them anywhere else.( Gin EagelsCollapse ) Current Mood: pleased

Jeanne Eagels DVD
Because I never learn my lesson...
I was wasting time at work again this morning and ordered a rare imported dvd-r of Jeanne Eagels.
Honestly I dont even care what the quality is, Im so desperate to see it finally.
As we well know, I bought an import dvd of Strangers When We Meet, and it then was released on real dvd like a few weeks later. So keep your eyes out, now that Ive paid for Jeanne Eagels, it is sure to come out for real soon.
PS, there are some beautiful new Kim pictures posted on imdb.com, especially some rare production shots from Vertigo... but it wont let me save them so I cant post them :( Current Mood: bored

Strangers When We Meet
I just ordered a supposedly imported DVD of "Strangers When We Meet" on ebay... Mabye a bit sketchy, but Im terribly excited, as all I have is a very poorly home recorded version from AMC years ago. Cant be any worse can it?( link to ebay auctionCollapse )
I'll keep y'all updated if it turns out to be an excellent find. Or a horrific scam.
I <3 this movie so. Kim as a housewife, a mother, a daughter, an adulterous slut, all in one film!
And really now, who doesnt LOVE the end with the super cheesy theme song during Kim's emotional drive away from her lover and their symbolic home?
I'm not so sure how the lyrics go...
"For a moment we loved and we laughed
It was only a star crossed moment
Your kiss is a kiss I'll never forge-e-et
Darling if or when
We should meet again
We will both have to hide
The longing inside
A love that is open and free
Prete-e-end we're only strangers when we meeeeeeeeet"
Im damn excited. Current Mood: cheerful

It's cool to find a community of Novak fans here on Livejournal...
Does anyone know of any upcoming screenings of some of her films (particularly in the SF Bay Area)? I was lucky to see screenings this year of "Bell, Book and Candle", "Picnic", and "5 Against the House".
Any new titles coming out on DVD?
